What is GED Test ?

GED, or General Educational Development, is a high school equivalency diploma in the United States — which is basically the same level as Mathayom 6 (Grade 12) here in Thailand.
Once you pass the GED exams, you’ll get an official certificate that you can use to apply to universities, both in Thailand and abroad.

Each university has its own rules though, some faculties or programs may accept GED students, while others might not, so it’s important to check the requirements carefully.

GED 2025: What’s on the Test?

The GED test is made up of four subjects:

  1. Mathematical Reasoning

  2. Reasoning through Language Arts (RLA) – English skills like reading, writing, and analyzing texts.

  3. Science – Covers topics like biology, chemistry, physics, and a bit of Earth science.

  4. Social Studies – Includes history, government, economics, and geography.

All GED tests are in English, and they’re emphasizes analysis and reasoning, ideal for those seeking deeper learning and real-world understanding.  Each subject has a total score of 200 points, and you’ll need to score 145 or more to pass.

How much does the GED test cost in 2025?

There are two types of GED exams: GED Ready and the official GED Test. Each comes with a different fee:

GED Ready costs $7.99 per subject
GED Test costs $85 per subject

If you’re taking the GED in the United States, the exam fee is usually cheaper and varies by state. If you’re planning to take the test in the U.S., make sure to check each state’s policies on the official website, GED.com.

To take the official GED Test, you first need to pass GED Ready with a minimum score of 145 points per subject. After that, you can book your real test. The GED Test must be taken at an official test center.

As mentioned earlier, the GED consists of four subjects, so it’s a good idea to prepare a budget of around 10,000–13,000 THB to cover all subjects and related costs.

If you don’t pass a subject, don’t worry — you can retake the exam up to 3 times (you’ll have to pay again, though). If you still don’t pass after the third attempt, GED will block you for 60 days before you can register again.

So to save time and money, make sure you’re well-prepared before taking the real test!

What’s the best way to prepare for the GED exam?

“If you know the enemy and know yourself, you need not fear the result of a hundred battles.”

Each GED subject includes a variety of question types, such as:

  • Hot Spot – Click on the correct spot or mark the right location in the answer box

  • Fill in the Blanks – Type the missing word(s) in the blank space

  • Drag and Drop – Drag the correct answer and drop it into the right place

  • Drop-down – Choose the correct answer from a drop-down list

  • Multiple Choice – Select the best answer from the given options

📐 GED Math

You’ll have 115 minutes to complete the Math section. The main topics covered in the test include:

  • Algebra (this is the most heavily tested area)

  • Quantitative Reasoning

  • Graphs and Geometry

  • Equations

For the calculator part, don’t worry — an electronic calculator will be provided right in the testing program on your computer.

Also, the test center will provide a whiteboard or scratchpad so you can do your rough work and calculations during the test.

📚 Reasoning Through Language Arts (RLA)

The RLA section measures your overall English skills. The test includes both reading and writing, and you’ll have 150 minutes to complete it.

The first part focuses on reading comprehension and grammar. You’ll read various passages and answer questions that test your ability to understand main ideas, details, tone, and grammar usage.

In the second part, you’ll be asked to write one essay based on a given argumentative prompt. You’ll have 45 minutes to plan, write, and revise your essay.

🌍 Social Studies

The Social Studies test measures your understanding of historical and current events, mainly focused on the United States. You’ll have 70 minutes to complete this section. The test covers the following topics:

  • Civics and Government – around 50%

  • U.S. History – around 20%

  • Economics – around 15%

  • Geography & World History – around 15%

It’s not just about memorizing facts — this section tests how well you can analyze, interpret, and make sense of real-world information from a social and historical perspective.

GED Score Levels Are Divided into 4 Categories:

  1. Below Passing Score
This level is considered below the passing threshold—in other words, a failing score. It ranges from 100 to 144 points.
If you don’t pass, you can reschedule and retake the test right away. Each subject allows up to 3 retakes. However, if you still don’t pass after the third attempt, you’ll have to wait 60 days before trying again, and the 60-day waiting period will apply to each additional attempt thereafter.

  2. Passing Score
A score within 145 to 164 points is considered passing. It shows that you meet the minimum requirements to earn your GED.

  3. College Ready Score
This range—165 to 174 points—not only means you passed, but also indicates that you’re ready for college-level work. Many colleges accept GED scores in this range directly for admission without requiring placement tests.

  4. College Ready + Credit Score
This is a high-achieving score, ranging from 175 to 200 points. In some cases, colleges may offer advanced placement, scholarships, or even let you skip certain introductory courses. It’s an excellent score that can open many doors for you!

Why Knowing GED Subjects Matters

Understanding what subjects are covered on the GED helps you see the full picture of what to prepare. The topics I’ve shared focus on the areas most commonly tested, but don’t forget to review additional material too, just in case the exam includes content outside the usual scope.

I’m cheering for your success—always. You’ve got this!
